One-on-one therapy is such a powerful medium for change. Making change in our own lives can be incredibly challenging due to our habits, mental health needs, family and work expectations and responsibilities. It's important to understand these things as well as learn effective, proven strategies to make real progress towards our goals.

I also do individual therapy with children and teens. Kids often have difficulty participating in traditional talk therapy, and utilizing play and art as ways to communicate, explore, connect and learn is typically a much more effective way to engage kids in the therapeutic process. I often use play therapy techniques in my one-on-one work with children as well as in family therapy and Child-Parent Psychotherapy.

Families are systems with their own cultures, rules and experiences. Often milestones and other life situations such as loss, trauma, individual mental health needs, and family conflict can throw families off-balance and the unit needs a tune-up. Family therapy can heal relationships and create a thriving safe-haven that can sustain and encourage its members.

One form of family therapy I am trained in is Child-Parent Psychotherapy. This is a very effective model specifically designed for caregivers and their children ages birth to 6 who have experienced trauma. In this model, caregiver and child meet together with me as we use play to build the parent/child relationship, support and train the caregiver, and provide a safe place for the child to express their needs and experiences.

Sometimes child caregivers are overlooked in therapy with children. I strongly believe that caregiver involvement in treatment will lead to more effective and lasting results for kids. When working individually with kids I can provide regular caregiver contact in person or by phone, as well as family sessions as needed. Caregivers have the powerful opportunity to model mental health management and making positive life changes for their children.

In addition, sometimes caregivers need personal support, too. I can provide treatment for caregivers with their own mental health needs, including new parents, adoptive parents, foster parents, grandparents, and any caregivers currently looking for a way to meet their own needs as well as improve their ability to care for the beloved children in their lives.
